Group of buildings on Holywell Hill. No 37, on the far left, dates from the 15th Century and is Grade II* listed - see www.historicengland.org.uk/listing/the-list/list-entry/1103095. It was formerly the Crown and Anchor Inn - see Image for a photo of its Sopwell Lane aspect. Next is no 39, also 15th Century. Grade II listed - see www.historicengland.org.uk/listing/the-list/list-entry/1347143. The building in the centre of the photo is no 41, Holywell Lodge, 19th Century but possibly older. Also grade II listed - see www.historicengland.org.uk/listing/the-list/list-entry/1103096.

The frontage of this building dates from the early 19th century, although the building itself is probably older. Grade II listed - see www.historicengland.org.uk/listing/the-list/list-entry/1103096) Beyond are the half timbered no 39 (15th century, grade II listed - see www.historicengland.org.uk/listing/the-list/list-entry/1347143) and, continuous with it, on the corner with Sopwell Lane, is the 15th century former Crown and Anchor Inn, one of many former coaching inns on Holywell Hill, given St Albans' position on the old coaching route from London to the north, which came along Sopwell Lane and then turned up Holywell Hill - the old carriage entrance can be seen in the photo. This building is grade II* listed - see www.historicengland.org.uk/listing/the-list/list-entry/1103095.

Both houses are on Holywell Hill, St Albans, which is far less peaceful than this photo suggests. Both are listed buildings. The front of Holywell Lodge is dated to the early 19th century on the official listing, though the house behind may be older; see the entry on the Historic England site https://historicengland.org.uk/listing/the-list/list-entry/1103096?section=official-list-entry . Torrington House is mid 19th century.
