View from Winn's Common
Winn's Common is the eastern part of Plumstead Common. Although this was once heathland there is now no heather to be found although plants such as gorse are still to be seen. However, names such as Heath Villas and Heathfield Terrace are reminders of what was once here. There are also tremendous views across the Thames basin as seen here from a spur between Riverdale Road and Purrett Road. Belmarsh Prison is just right of centre.

Remnant heathland on Winns Common
The gorse is an indication that this was once heathland, as well as the poor stony soil and the names like Heathfield Terrace and Heath Villas. Winns Common is the eastern part of Plumstead Common and has a steep northern edge looking across the Thames. The nearby flats are in Riverdale Road and the distant tower block is in Woolwich.

Storm clouds over Plumstead
This was a day of heavy showers and some bright sunshine. Despite appearances, there was no rain locally for much of the rest of the day although I would imagine it was fairly wet over north-east London which was the direction this photograph was taken. This was from the top of Viewland Road on Plumstead Common. The Barking Creek Barrier is on the far left of the picture.

Early morning view down Purrett Road
Purrett Road drops steeply down from Plumstead Common to Lower Plumstead. In this view, taken not long after sunrise, the Barking Creek Barrier is to the left, the two big grey buildings in the distance are known as 'Iron Mountain' - see http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/2990467 while in front of these the lines of yellow wagons are within a worksite for Crossrail, situated between Woolwich and the southern terminus at Abbey Wood.

Viewland Road, Plumstead Common
Plumstead Common is as near as the North of England you can get in London. It has ravines, steep steps and houses built up hillsides. It also has excellent views across to the River Thames and to north-east London.
This view looks down Viewland Road. The Barking Creek Barrier is clearly visible right of centre, and Belmarsh Prison is in front of it.
