The gorse is an indication that this was once heathland, as well as the poor stony soil and the names like Heathfield Terrace and Heath Villas. Winns Common is the eastern part of Plumstead Common and has a steep northern edge looking across the Thames. It gives fine views across to the heights of Havering-atte-Bower.
