London (Ultra Low Emission Zone Expansion)

Introduction

The Ultra Low Emission Zone in London operates differently to those in the rest of England. Essentially, vehicles under 3.5 tonnes operate under the ULEZ banner and those over are covered by the Low Emission Zone (LEZ).

The ULEZ details on this page represent the expanded zone that took effect from 29 August 2023. If you wish to see the previous zone, then please click here.

Exemptions

  • Blue Badge holders need to pay the ULEZ charge if their vehicle does not meet the minimum emission standard. If your vehicle is registered with the DVLA with a 'disabled' taxation class then there is a grace period providing an exemption from paying the ULEZ charge until 24 October 2027. This grace period is also available to wheelchair accessible vehicles and also to individuals receiving certain disability benefits.
  • If you are clinically assessed as being too ill to travel to an appointment on public transport you may be eligible to claim back any ULEZ charge paid from your treating hospital. Your hospital will tell you if you are eligible.
  • London licensed taxis are exempt from ULEZ charges. All newly licensed taxis must be Zero-emission capable (ZEC) vehicles.
  • Minibuses used for community transport.
  • Wheelchair accessible private hire vehicles.
  • Historic vehicles built more than 40 years ago.
  • Specialist agricultural vehicles.
  • Military vehicles.
  • Non-road going vehicles which are allowed to drive on the highway (for example, excavators).
  • Certain types of mobile cranes.

Discounts

Some showmans vehicles may be eligible for a 100% discount from the ULEZ charge.
