The gorse is an indication that this was once heathland, as well as the poor stony soil and the names like Heathfield Terrace and Heath Villas. Winns Common is the eastern part of Plumstead Common and has a steep northern edge looking across the Thames. The nearby flats are in Riverdale Road and the distant tower block is in Woolwich.
