Site of "Hare & Hounds Inn", Botchergate - March 2018
Botchergate began to develop in the late 18th Century and the "Hare & Hounds Inn" probably dated from this period. It was acquired by the State Management Scheme on 17 October 1916 and closed in 1924. According to the 1879 OS Map. the "Hare & Hounds Inn" was situated directly opposite Portland Place and was bordered by the now vanished Hare & Hounds Lane and Ramshay's Lane - making its most likely location what is now the modern "Tasty Food" outlet. Date of demolition has not been found. It is known that from the 1880's to 1916, the "Hare & Hounds Inn" was owned by a George Ismay, who also operated the "Ismay's Vaults" in Collier Street - almost directly behind the "Hare & Hounds". This "Ismay's Vaults" seems to have been short-lived, appearing only in an 1899 survey of Carlisle pubs by the local temperance party and being closed before 1916. George Ismay may also have managed "Ismay's Vaults" on Scotch Street - see: Image] . The Cumberland Inn
On Botchergate Street, Carlisle. Once it was the last of the pubs run by the state - the Carlisle State Management scheme which saw all pubs in Carlisle nationalised from the First World War up until about 1972. Since then it has had a few independent landlords, including a spell as a Thai restaurant.

Site of "Railway Tavern", Botchergate - March 2018
Bounded on the north by the "Caledonian Hotel" (see: Image] ) and to the south by the "Albion Hotel" (see: Image] ), the "Railway Tavern" is believed built in 1897, replacing an earlier pub of the same name. Acquired by the State Management Scheme on 21 October 1916, it was closed in 1917 - although the premises stood until demolished 1998/99 to make way for the modern business units seen here. The exact location of the "Railway Tavern" is uncertain, but was probably in the middle of this block. Photograph is for record only – I have no connection with any business seen in this view and cannot advise on their products or services.

The Border Rambler
Opened in February 1859 as the Albion Hotel/Tavern, it became a State Managed pub in August 1916. Closed in October 1916 for extensive Harry Redfern designed renovations (which included incorporation of the Deakin's Vaults pub), it reopened on 7 June 1917. It was sold to the John Smiths Brewing Group on 7 May 1973 and renamed "The Border Rambler" in 1992/3. https://thestatemanagementstory.org/the-pubs/border-rambler-botchergate-carlisle/ Image
