Botchergate began to develop in the late 18th Century and the "Hare & Hounds Inn" probably dated from this period. It was acquired by the State Management Scheme on 17 October 1916 and closed in 1924. According to the 1879 OS Map. the "Hare & Hounds Inn" was situated directly opposite Portland Place and was bordered by the now vanished Hare & Hounds Lane and Ramshay's Lane - making its most likely location what is now the modern "Tasty Food" outlet. Date of demolition has not been found. It is known that from the 1880's to 1916, the "Hare & Hounds Inn" was owned by a George Ismay, who also operated the "Ismay's Vaults" in Collier Street - almost directly behind the "Hare & Hounds". This "Ismay's Vaults" seems to have been short-lived, appearing only in an 1899 survey of Carlisle pubs by the local temperance party and being closed before 1916. George Ismay may also have managed "Ismay's Vaults" on Scotch Street - see: Image] .
