Somerset Road, ORPINGTON, BR6 0EZ

This road first appears on maps published in 1896. It is unusual for being built only one side, the other side originally being White Hart Meadow, before being built on to form White Hart Road (see Image), the gardens of whose houses now back on to Somerset Road.

The first block of terrace on the right of this photo first appears on a map published in 1896. However, the road itself is marked in full, suggesting that the remaining houses would have followed soon after.

Broomhill itself appears from old maps to have been a small development in its own rights. These Victorian villas (which appear in the 1868 Godfrey Edition map) appear to be the start of its expansion down the hill towards Orpington High Street. This was later followed by a small group of three streets named after southwest England counties (see Image, also note the start of Somerset Road on the right of the photo), with eventual development of the whole road not taking place until interwar years (see Image).

Looking down towards the High Street, with late Victorian villas on the left (see Image) with the later development on the site of White Hart Meadow further down (see Image). On the skyline in the background can be seen the roofline of All Saints Church.

Somerset Road leads from Wiltshire Road towards Broomhill Road. Road closed due to temporary water main works.

Looking down the narrow section of Broomhill Road as it begins to drop towards the High Street. No 46 on the left is locally listed. The footpath on the right leads to Keswick Road.

No 46 is in contrast to the rest of Broomhill Road - the 1868 Godfrey Edition map of Orpington shows a few buildings on Broomhill, of which this would seem to be one. It is locally listed.
