Distance

Ham Street, approaching the Manor
The long, low building is one of the Manor's outbuildings. Stables perhaps - but rather more architectural effort generally goes into stables, with clock-tower and cupola.

View south along Ham Street
Entering a stretch dominated by grand 18th-century houses. The rather dowdy building on the left is an outbuilding of the Manor.

Wiggins and Pointers Cottages, off Wiggins Lane, Ham
Sited along a little alleyway - an arrangement that early photographs show was quite common until Victorian times.

Ham Street Deserta
This strikes me as a very odd townscape - if indeed 'town' is the right word. A fair length of Ham Street runs between the high walls of grand Georgian houses - Beaufort House on the right at this point, the Manor on the left. The fewer entrances, the fewer comings and goings. To add to the sense of desolation, the Royal Oak - on the corner of Sandy Lane - is boarded up. I find it quite easy to imagine away the tarmac surfaces, and see the scene as it must have been in the days of horse traction. The photo might be mistaken for an early morning scene, but I took it at about 4.45 on a Friday afternoon in March.

Wiggins Lane, Ham
This was called Back Lane till the 90s when it was changed as you can't get to the rest of Back Lane from here any more so wasn't part of it in practice.
