This strikes me as a very odd townscape - if indeed 'town' is the right word. A fair length of Ham Street runs between the high walls of grand Georgian houses - Beaufort House on the right at this point, the Manor on the left. The fewer entrances, the fewer comings and goings. To add to the sense of desolation, the Royal Oak - on the corner of Sandy Lane - is boarded up. I find it quite easy to imagine away the tarmac surfaces, and see the scene as it must have been in the days of horse traction. The photo might be mistaken for an early morning scene, but I took it at about 4.45 on a Friday afternoon in March.
