Henley Close, St Marychurch Street, Rotherhithe, London, SE16
Viewed from St Marys Estate. Named after Councillor Albert Henley, ex mayor of Bermondsey, who was killed on 11-05-1941 fighting incendiary bombs that had fallen on the roof of the Bermondsey Town Hall in Spa Road, London, SE1.

Princes Iron Works, Rotherhithe, early 1988
The sign on the building says Rotherhithe Street, which is the street numbering for premises both in the street, which is largely further east, and the alley on the right that connects through to it. Elephant Stairs (to the Thames) were down the alley with rubbish to the left of the building. The streets here now are renamed as a looping extension of Elephant Lane from near right to near left. The site is now occupied by modern flats - Princes Tower.

The Torbay pub (site of). 91, Rotherhithe Street, London, SE16
Directly opposite Elephant Lane that would make it the gap between the red and white buildings. It was a three storeyed building first recorded in 1803 and closed about 1955. Said to have been one of the busiest pubs in the area and also said to have had a very strong rowing team. I can only assume that the team consisted of stevedores who raced barges by rowing.

The Ship pub, Elephant Lane, Rotherhithe
A Young's pub (Young's was a London based brewery until taken over by Wells in 2006 - see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Young's ). Many people were sitting at benches on the pavement outside the pub on an unusually hot Saturday in May.

Shamrock public house (site of)
Site of that was somewhere in Clarks Orchard, Rotherhithe, SE16. May have been a beer house as it was very short lived i.e. 1868 to mid 1870's. Clarks Orchard was originally a bit of a dirty looking place that ran from Rotherhithe Street south to St Marychurch Street, a distance of about 300 yards. I first saw it in 1961 when it was only 20 yards long and the width of a small car. It can be seen in the image of the Europa pub. Image looking south and what a contrast.
