The former Western Road Secondary Modern School, Crookes
The junior school block. I once reached these school gates only to be badly bitten by a dog. Someone in school quickly patched me up and so I failed to miss any lessons. Not much has changed since the ‘50s; white railing at the road’s edge, yellow bin, writing on the road, the school sign has been added and all that’s missing are the gas lamps. In the background can be seen the infant’s school.
The school is now known as Westways.

This was the junior school block. As I seem to remember, it was a hall surrounded on three sides by classrooms. My worst recollection is trying to be a ‘tree’, which was during dancing, or P.E.

This high wall is part retaining wall. The playground above was built up to level off the steep natural slope. The building at the rear is the old senior school block, now known as Westways.

The junior school block. Through the arched gateway and to the left was a flight of steps to the first floor of the school. One, or both of those windows with the panelling beneath, used to be doorways into the school. The steps were not a straight flight, but returned in the opposite direction. The first section had a half landing. This link shows the steps http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a303/escafeld01/WESTERNROADJUNIORSCHOOL.jpg I don’t recall any shelter or canopy to the doorway. The school is now Westways.
A tree has been felled outside the gate.

Mona Avenue, Crookes
This was taken from the corner of Western Road and Mona Avenue and looking right towards the ‘new’ entranceway to Westways, the former Western Road Secondary Modern School. Further down the road there is also access to the Juniors and Infants School, which these days is called Primary. Back in the ‘40s and ‘50s, the outside toilet block was very unsanitary.
At the bottom of the hill, Mona Avenue takes a 90º turn to the left and becomes Mona Road and goes on to meet Springvale Road.

The lower part of the junior school block. This is where group school photographs were taken, with backs towards this railing. Back in the ‘50s when I was at this school there were steps here to the first floor.
