Chantry Mill
The view from the footpath over the fence. A watermill has operated from this spot since the 13th century, sometimes known as Park Mill as there two mills operating down Chantry Lane in the 18th century. Until circa 1826 it was used as a fulling mill then changed its function to grind corn until 1918 when it was briefly used to power electricity for nearby Sullington. It is now a private house.

Sand Strata in the Unnamed Wood near Chantry Mill
In the side of a steep hill which could possibly have been a former sand quarry is a clear strata of red sand much of which is quarried still on the other side of the hill. The land here between the chalk downs and Weald clay has a number of layers beginning with upper greensand, then gault and then around Washington and Storrington a line of free draining sand known as Folkestone Formation. It is used for building sand and explains the large sand quarries at Rock Common and nearby Chantry Lane.

Wood near Chantry Mill
Not marked on older maps so the wood has grown up over the last 100 years. The footpath from Sullington to Chantry Lane goes through it.

Storrington: Chantry Lane bridge
The bridge carries the lane over the River Stor. Please see Image] for the view of the river from the bridge. Old Ordnance Survey 1:25,000 scale maps show that the Civil Parish boundary between Storrington and Sullington ran, and indeed probably still does run, down the centre of the lane here, the former to the right, the latter to the left.

Chantry Lane
Possibly an old droving road as it begins on Chantry Hill then heads northwards to the A283 then continues as other lanes towards what was once Chiltington Common. Here it is crossing the River Stor.
