Chalgrove Post Office
It seems that this may have been built as the Post office from the beginning. Both it and the van are in need of some fresh paint. Note the date 1869 picked out in grey brick on the gable. The face of the building is in header bond http://www.geograph.org.uk/article/Brick-bonds#header-bond which is a relatively uncommon form.

Chalgrove Post Office
This is rather grand for a village post office. Mind you, the village does seem well provided with local facilities; next door is one of two village stores and nearby are other small shops and three pubs. Shakespeare's Way goes along the linear High Street. Is this the same post van as in Image] ?

Chalgrove Post Office postbox, ref OX 44 532
EIIR wall box. This is the version specifically intended for use at Post Offices, where collection times can be displayed in a window rather than on a plate on the box itself.

High Street, Chalgrove
The busiest part of High Street begins about here; the green is just beyond on the left and the Post Office is visible further along.

The Red Lion, Chalgrove
An old village pub, dating back to the 15th or 16th century, later remodelled but still retaining cruck frames. It is actually owned by the Church Trustees. Listed Grade II for group value.

John Hampden Hall
On Chalgrove High Street. John Hampden, one of the major players on the Parliamentarian side in the English Civil War, was killed at the battle of Chalgrove near here. His name is remembered in the village hall, here, in a strongly Parliamentarian area. Shakespeare's Way passes the door. He died 30 years before; I wonder what he would have made of the conflict had he still been around?

Chalgrove village green
The small but immaculate green hosts the war memorial. There are two of Chalgrove's three pubs adjacent, the Red Lion across the road and the Crown to the left. We are just setting out on the next leg of Shakespeare's Way.
