Andrew Strauss (later to score a century) leads the England team out of the pavilion just before eleven o'clock on the first day of the second Test Match. West Indies had won the toss and chosen to bat. The ramshackle old commentary boxes have been removed from the first floor of the lovely Victorian Pavilion and replaced by a new sightscreen which doubles as an advertising hoarding when the bowling is from the Radcliffe Road End (from which this picture was taken). The green Nottinghamshire County Cricket Club flag on the right-hand pole was at half-mast to honour the club's former scorer, Brian Hewes, who had died the day before. Notts players and supporters were also coming to terms with the announcement earlier in the morning that the popular England batsman James Taylor had been forced to retire because of a serious heart condition. There was no cricket on a dismal wet morning, but the third day of the County Championship match against Surrey began after lunch and Notts won an extremely good game the following afternoon.

The view has changed with the reconstruction of the centre section of the Radcliffe Road End on the other side of the ground (in Image). (The picture was taken shortly after the start of the final session of the day-night County Championship match against Worcestershire: the floodlights were on - superfluously at 7.30 in midsummer - as play would end after sunset. Despite lovely weather, pink-ball cricket proved as unpopular at Trent Bridge as elsewhere and the crowd was much smaller than is usual - diehards only....)

The historic Pavilion at Trent Bridge Cricket Ground is being rebuilt and extended. A lot of the existing building has been demolished and work has now begun on steelwork for the new work, which will be much higher than before. This is a view from Hound Road, as is Image], taken two months before.

This memorial to the six Nottinghamshire County Cricket Club players who died in The Great War was unveiled, in the presence of descendants of Alexander Crawford, Ralph Hemingway, Harold Hodges, Charles Pepper, William Riley and Harvey Staunton, on 4 September 2018. The words carved on the trench-board stump on the left are from a call to arms by Arthur Conan Doyle: "If the cricketer has a straight eye let him look along the barrel of a rifle". The memorial is on the stairs at the main entrance to the Pavilion.

It was a cold day for the earliest-ever start of a County Championship season, and twenty wickets fell. By five o'clock Worcestershire were 78 for 6 in reply to Nottinghamshire's disappointing 118. (Notts did better in the second innings, scoring 403, and won by 92 runs on the fourth morning.) Since last season the unsightly old commentary and press boxes have been removed from the front of the pavilion - see Image], Image] and others for how things were for many years.
