The green Nottinghamshire County Cricket Club flag on the right-hand pole was at half-mast to honour the club's former scorer, Brian Hewes, who had died the day before. Notts players and supporters were also coming to terms with the announcement earlier in the morning that the popular England batsman James Taylor had been forced to retire because of a serious heart condition. There was no cricket on a dismal wet morning, but the third day of the County Championship match against Surrey began after lunch and Notts won an extremely good game the following afternoon.
