Hulme's Bridge Ferry.
This ferry is on the Manchester Ship Canal and connects Irlam, on the north bank, with Flixton to the south. It is still operational and is a free ferry. It replaced a bridge crossing the River Irwell, which was canalised during the construction of the canal in the 1890s. I believe it still operates because an Act of Parliament requires it. Startled Swan on the Ship Canal at Davyhulme
A swan, startled by the passing ferry, takes flight (it actually only flew for a few yards across to the other side of the canal).
The presence of group of swans on the Manchester Ship Canal near the outfall from the former Davyhulme Wastewater treatment Plant is testament to how well the canal has been cleaned up since the days when it was a heavily polluted waterway. The area is now part of the Davyhulme Millennium Nature Reserve which was opened in 1999. It provides a mixed landscape of wetland, woods, water features and open land and is a designated Site of Biological Importance.

Manchester Ship Canal, Hulmes Bridge Ferry
The two jetties (now securely fenced off) are the remains of a ferry which used to cross the Manchester Ship Canal at this point. The ferry replaced a bridge which crossed the River Irwell here until it was incorporated into the canal. It appears that the ferry hasn't operated since 2009. *UPDATE*
Since this photograph was taken in 2011, the ferry has been reinstated (see
Image]) and was still running in 2018 http://www.hulmesferry.uk/timetable/ although its future remains unsure.
