A swan, startled by the passing ferry, takes flight (it actually only flew for a few yards across to the other side of the canal). The presence of group of swans on the Manchester Ship Canal near the outfall from the former Davyhulme Wastewater treatment Plant is testament to how well the canal has been cleaned up since the days when it was a heavily polluted waterway. The area is now part of the Davyhulme Millennium Nature Reserve which was opened in 1999. It provides a mixed landscape of wetland, woods, water features and open land and is a designated Site of Biological Importance.
