37-43 Rutland Street, Leicester
A florid affair of c1900 with lots of fussy details, a jolly collection of gabled dormers and octagonal lantern. Grade II listed.
It was in a rather sorry state, either mostly or totally disused. The four men roughly in the middle of the picture had been walking about and staring at the building for some time, an indication, one hopes, of plans afoot to revive its fortunes.

Former Odeon, Rutland Street, Leicester
Built 1938 by Robert Bullivant. It has, writes Pevsner, "the Dudok-influenced decorative brickwork and inflated curved forms typical of this chain" (e.g.

It was subdivided into three in 1974, before the advent of a large multi-screen cinema out of town rang the death knell in 1997. However, it has now been restored and is branded as the Athena venue for all manner of events.
Willem Dudok was a Dutch modernist architect.
