Part of the north wall, Y Gaer, Brecon Roman Fort
The north wall was excavated in 1970 from a mound of earth and the outer walls of the fort left exposed to show visitors the scale and extent of the site. The site is wholly on private farm land not crossed by a footpath. When visiting I suggest calling at the adjacent farmhouse where the gentleman farmer seems happy to advise friendly visitors.

Y Gaer, Brecon Roman fort (north east corner)
The curve on the corner can be clearly seen. The fort was initially established around 75 AD in typical 'playing card' shape but made of basic clay banks topped with a wooden palisade, later replaced with the stone walls seen here after maybe 100 AD or so. Today the site is in the stewardship of Cadw.

Y Gaer, Brecon Roman fort, part of the east gate
This gatehouse was one of two controlling the east gate. It has been exposed by Cadw and some sort of work seems in progress, as indicated by lack of turf etc on the site here.
