Fellside Methodist Church, Low Fellside
A carved inscription at the top of the building says : PRIMITIVE METHODIST MISSION HALL. 1899. JOB PENNINGTON'S MEMORIAL.

The Old Shambles
View towards the end of a lane (or yard) off Highgate, which starts beside Ye Olde Fleece Inn (photo http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/3434709 ).
The Old Shambles was built in 1779 to house the town's butchers. Animals were slaughtered in the street but the site was badly drained, so must have been quite unpleasant even by the standards of the day. After only 25 years the butchers moved to the 'New Shambles' in the Market Place. The butchers' shops have since been converted to dwellings.
The taller building at the head of the yard was originally The Butcher's Arms pub, which was later used as a dye factory and a warehouse. Today it appears to be in residential use. It is a listed building http://www.imagesofengland.org.uk/details/default.aspx?id=75472 .

The Old Smokehouse
Located in Smokehouse Yard, next door to Booths supermarket. The building had been in a dilapidated state for many years before being restored in 2007. Today it is once again in use as a smokehouse https://www.pappystexasbarbeque.co.uk/ .
It is a Grade II listed building - for particulars see Images of England http://www.imagesofengland.org.uk/details/default.aspx?id=75499 .
The smoke house was built in the 1880s by a local grocery business, as part of a small meat factory. It was used for both air curing and smoking. Information from JWRC Conservation http://jwrc.co.uk/recording_research_ex3_smoke_house.html , which has a brief history of the site, and several interesting photos taken before redevelopment.

'Stand in the footprints of Wainwright', Wainwrights Yard in Kendal
'.... to view the Langdale Pikes. Reproduced with the kind permission of Mrs Betty Wainwright and Kendal Museum'.
The trouble is, there is no view of the pikes (or any hills for that matter) just some stone slabs carved with illustrations taken from A. Wainwright's guidebooks. I wonder what the allegedly grumpy 'master fellwalker' would have made of all this? Perhaps it's as well he died before they named a shopping mall after him.
