Drug misuse and ASB in Kendal town centre

Increase in foot patrols and targeted stop searches in locations reported to us.
Working in partnership with other agencies such as housing and Westmorland and Furness council.
Conduct Street safes in the problem areas, take positive action against those responsible
Operation Enhance aims to target this kind of activity and sees extra police patrols in areas identified as hotspots for anti-social behaviour and/or serious violence.
Between 01.06.24 and 22/05/25 we have conducted Regular patrols in an around the town centre. Operation Enhance continues in the designated Hot spots for ASB in the town centre.
We continue to tackle these issues.

Acquisitive Crime

We have identified an upward trend in thefts from outbuildings in recent months as such we have launched Operation Raptor.
This will see targeted patrols in identified areas to disrupt any criminal activity.
We will be working with our colleagues in Crime Scene Investigation and CID to try and maximise any opportunities to catch those responsible and bring them to justice.
We will be working with partners and residents to improve crime prevention.
Part of this will include property marking schemes and we will be offering bike marking for pedal cycles at venues around the NPT over the coming weeks/months. These will be advertised on our social media pages so keep a look out for those.
You can help stop these thefts with some simple security measures such as locking sheds/outbuildings. Do not leave valuables in visible locations. Consider installing lighting and/or CCTV to deter thieves. If you see a person acting in a suspicious manner and think they may be looking to commit crime then please let us know, ideally at the time it is happening by contacting the police on 101.

You have told us that you are concerned, as business owners and local residents that you are concerned about a group of youths causing issues in Kendal Town Centre on evenings and weekends.

We have identified most of those involved. There have been various interventions by Police including the use if dispersal powers, stop search and arrests for offences alleged to have been committed.

There have been a variety of outcomes and some cases remain ongoing. Youths involved in lower level incidents are subject to Anti Social Behaviour Contracts and our Child Centred Policing Team have been involved.

For more serious matters and where youths have been arrested they have been referred to the local Youth Justice Service who will determine the most appropriate outcome from the Criminal Justice System. We are also undertaking work which would see Anti Social Behaviour Injunctions being requested from the Magistrates Court for this involved in the most serious incidents.

We continue our high visibility foot patrols in the town centre as part of our routine work and also Operation Enhance. Our patrols and intervention work remain ongoing through Spring 2026.

You have told us that you have seen increasing numbers of electric motorbikes and electric scooters being used in an anti social manner and in a way that causes a risk to pedestrians.

During our routine patrol work we have challenged those using electric bikes and scooters int he town centre.

As a result of our ongoing intervention the Neighbourhood Team have seized from riders one electric motorbike and three electric scooters in the three weeks since Christmas. These have all been seized under Section 165 of the Road Traffic Act as the vehicles were not registered, insured and the riders had no licence.

We know that this remains an area of concern and work will continue to educate and enforce in respect of this.
