Paignton - Newcastle express at Naas Crossing, near Haresfield 1949
View SE, towards Bristol etc., also Swindon on the GWR - see various other railway scenes along this stretch south of Gloucester. The locomotive on this Summer Saturday relief is LMS Hughes/Fowler 5P4F 'Crab' 2-6-0 No. 42897 (built 1930, withdrawn 4/64).

Down (northbound) WR freight at Naas Crossing, Haresfield
View southward on four-track joint ex-GW and ex-Midland main lines south of Gloucester, between Tuffley and Standish Junctions - see other images here for details. The long Class J freight is headed by ex-GW Churchward '5100' class 2-6-2T No. 5141 (built 3/06 as No. 3141, renumbered 1/29, withdrawn 10/52).

Paddington - Cheltenham express at Naas Crossing, south of Gloucester
View southward, towards Swindon and London on the ex-GWR Swindon - Gloucester etc. main line. The nearer two tracks are the ex-Midland main line Bristol - Birmingham; Naas Crossing Box is just visible on the right. The 13.45 Paddington - Cheltenham (St James) will be reversed at Gloucester (Central) for its final leg. The locomotive is 'Castle' 4-6-0 No. 7002 'Devizes Castle' (built 6/46, recently fitted with double chimney and withdrawn 3/64).

Down holiday express at Naas Crossing (Haresfield), 1949
View northward towards Gloucester on the ex-Midland Birmingham - Bristol main line, paralleled by the ex-GWR main line: an express for Bristol and the West, headed by yet another Stanier Class 5 4-6-0, No. 44826 (built 1944, withdrawn 9/67).

Down 'Devonian' at Naas Crossing, south of Gloucester
View northward, towards Gloucester and the North: ex-Midland Birmingham - Bristol main line, running parallel with the ex-GW Gloucester etc. - Swindon main line. The 'Devonian', the crack North-East - South-West express, left Bradford Forster Square at 09.20 and eventually reached Kingswear at 20.40. Here ex-Midland Johnson/Deeley 2P 4-4-0 No. 530 (later 40530, withdrawn 1/51) is piloting Stanier 'Jubilee' 6P 4-6-0 No. 45739 'Ulster' (built 1936, withdrawn 1/67) on a heavy train made up partly of GWR coaches.

Auto-train from Chalford recedes towards Gloucester at Naas Crossing, south of Tuffley Junction
View northward, towards Gloucester, Cheltenham, Birmingham etc. on the ex-GW & Midland Joint four-track section between Standish and Tuffley Junctions - for details see other scenes, including Haresfield and Standish. The locomotive propelling is Collett 48XX 0-4-2T No. 1464 (built 2/36 as No. 4864, renumbered 11/46, withdrawn 6/60).

Gloucester - Bristol stopping train at Naas Crossing, south of Tuffley Junction
View northward, towards Gloucester: ex-Midland Birmingham - Bristol main line, parallelled by ex-GWR amin line to Swindon etc. The train is headed by Fowler LMS 6'9" 3-cylinder Compound No. 41074, built c. 1925, recently repainted in 'British Railways' livery, and withdrawn 8/54.

Down relief express on ex-Midland line at Naas Crossing, south of Gloucester
View northward, towards Gloucester on the Birmingham - Bristol main line - cf. Image] and others. Back in 1949, holiday relief expresses were often made up of a scratch set of coaches: this one, probably a relief to the 'Pines Express' (Manchester - Bournemouth West) is headed by Ivatt 4MT 2-6-0 No. 43013 (built 4/48, initially with double chimney, withdrawn 1967).
