The newest branch of the Post Office network opened, a couple of hours later than planned, a little after 3pm this sunny Wednesday afternoon. Unusually, this is a brand new branch rather than being a replacement for some recently closed office, Poundbury never having previously had a post office nearer than Dorchester town centre. The village (or suburb, whatever you care to call it) has grown considerably over the last ten years. The Mayor of Dorchester, Councillor Robin Potter, is about to cut the ribbon to officially open Image Poundbury has grown large enough over the last 20 years to warrant its own branch, the nearest before now being in Dorchester town centre. Also pictured are the postmaster and postmistress, in whose store, which opened six months ago, will house the post office. The official opening took place a couple of hours later than the planned 1pm opening time. See also: Image Image

Landscaping, beauty therapy, gifts are available in the shops here, set in buildings with canopied balconies.

Bridport Road in the recently-built "urban village" of Poundbury. Bridport Road follows the route of a Roman road westwards. It was also part of the route of the trunk A35 road until Dorchester's by-pass was built and opened. The houses are a much more recent addition to the scene. Poundbury has been developed in stages since the 1990s.
