Askern Colliery
Now demolished colliery on a very misty Monday morning (as I recall). I was going to see the largest steam winders in the UK and was quite privileged as access was not always granted.

Enormous winding engine, Askern Main Colliery
Yates & Thom built three very large horizontal twin tandem compound steam winding engines. The one at Astley Green Colliery survives but the two at Askern were scrapped in 1981 and 1982. These were 3000 horsepower with two sets of cylinders 36" & 60" bores by 72" stroke. The right hand piston tail rod is blurred as these engines were hard at it in revenue service. The driver is in the elevated cabin in the left background.

Askern Colliery - driver's eye view.
This is in the driver's cabin seen in Image A rare privilege to be allowed this type of access in a working colliery. The driver of a steam winding engine had a skilful and responsible job. Askern Colliery - turbo-alternators
A pair of steam turbine sets in this large colliery in the Doncaster area. There was also an adjoining Coalite smokeless fuel plant. This has all been swept away now.

Askern Colliery - steam engine
This is an inverted vertical compound (enclosed) by Belliss & Morcom Ltd, Birmingham, No.3908 of 1910. It was standby (1975-1979/1980) and subsequently scrapped circa 1981/2. The piston valve cylinders were 15" & 24" x 10" stroke. It developed 365 BHP at 375 rpm on steam at 160 psi.

Askern Colliery - winding engine
Askern was home to two of the biggest steam winding engines built in the UK. This is one of the two horizontal twin tandem compound engines built in 1912 by Yates & Thom of Blackburn. These were scrapped in 1982. The cylinders were 36" & 60" x 72" stroke. This view shows the bi-cylindro-conical winding drum that rose from 16' to 24' diameter. On the right are the two eccentrics driven off the main crank pin by a drag link and crank assembly.
