This is in the driver's cabin seen in Image A rare privilege to be allowed this type of access in a working colliery. The driver of a steam winding engine had a skilful and responsible job. Yates & Thom built three very large horizontal twin tandem compound steam winding engines. The one at Astley Green Colliery survives but the two at Askern were scrapped in 1981 and 1982. These were 3000 horsepower with two sets of cylinders 36" & 60" bores by 72" stroke.
