Askern Colliery - winding engine

Askern was home to two of the biggest steam winding engines built in the UK. This is one of the two horizontal twin tandem compound engines built in 1912 by Yates & Thom of Blackburn. These were scrapped in 1982. The cylinders were 36" & 60" x 72" stroke. This view shows the bi-cylindro-conical winding drum that rose from 16' to 24' diameter. On the right are the two eccentrics driven off the main crank pin by a drag link and crank assembly.
