Coar's Lane, Belfast
One of narrow streets running north off Curtis Street (off York Street) towards what is now the Dunbar Link. This one has been abandoned as a public right of way and only serves as an access to adjacent buildings. A quick perusal of old Belfast Street Directories shows that the first reference is in 1861 when it had “twenty four small houses See also Image and Image

York Street demolition work, Belfast (2013-4)
The view along Clarke’s Lane Image towards Curtis Street. The excavator is on this site Image (51-57 York Street). The building on the right is the former Play Board building (59-65 York Street Image). It’s not clear whether Clarke’s Lane will remain as a public thoroughfare after redevelopment or whether it will suffer the same fate as the Long Lane Image

The Education Office, Belfast (detail)
Built in 1899-1901 as a lemonade factory, this building, in Academy Street, now houses the offices of the Belfast Education and Library Board. The pavilioned roof towers are its most distinctive feature. Continue to Image

Rooftop gull, Belfast (2013)
On 24 June 2013 the BBC website referred to “Aggressive behaviour by nesting seagulls has led to a Belfast business erecting warning notices to customers. Bird experts said the high flat roofs of inner-city buildings offer the perfect site for gulls to incubate their eggs and raise their young”. This one is on the roof of 51-57 York Street – a property soon to be demolished – see Image The behaviour of urban gulls (whose natural instinct is to protect their young) is a feature of central Belfast - see also Image (March 2010). Clarke's Lane, Belfast (July 2008)
See Image Clarke’s Lane is just a few paces to the west of Coar’s Lane. It remains a public thoroughfare. The same street directory describes it as having “seventeen small houses”. Image shows a similar view after the construction of Block “B” of the University of Ulster Image
