2008 : High Street, Bathford
High Street is an unrelieved climb through Bathford with no chance of refreshments and only the annoying traffic calming measures to provide amusement.

The Post Office at Bathford
The Post Office at Bathford is in a prominent position as you travel up the hill towards Kingsdown.

2008 : Bathford Bakery Est 1777
The sign stands outside a cottage probably dating from that time but the bakery was gone.
In the other half of the frame we are looking up High Street, the road reaches Kingsdown in a little over a mile and is uphill all the way.

Just a grille to peer out of
Anyone finding themselves in this old lock-up would not have a chance of escaping through this opening. Bathford had a two-cell lock-up - perhaps it had something to do with being close to the Crown inn just down the hill.

Locked up for the night
One of two heavy wooden doors to keep in the drunk or unruly for a few hours. Bathford's old lock-up has a fairly unusual appearance in that it is not a typical 'roundhouse'; rather it is rectangular with a pitched tile roof. See Image] for the other door or Image] for a wider view.

A room for the night
Bathford retains its old lock-up for those who perhaps had a little too much the night before. These village lock-ups (often called blind houses due to having no windows) were quite common in the latter eighteenth century before an established police force took over dealing with the inebriated.
The cells do not appear to have any occupants; see Image] for a detailed view of the doors.
