Scale model of dam
BRE dates way back, and during the war carried out testing on the size of explosives required to make a hole in a concrete dam. This is in the woods at BRE, which have bluebells in at certain times of the year.

Modern experimental housing at BRE in Garston
Taken through the roof trusses I was delivering for some more houses (which were being built on the concrete slabs visible in the centre of the shot: why so many people have their roof delivered before the walls are even built beats me), this shows part of a mock street of modern experimental housing designs constructed at BRE's site near Watford. More information as to what BRE do is contained in the description to John Webb's Image

The Building Research Station (3)
A view in early 1997 of the low-energy office block (building 16) nearing completion. The stacks on the face of the building provide ventilation in warm weather; note that three of them await their cowls. Yet to be fitted are glass louvres in front of the windows - these could be angled either to reflect sunlight away from the building if it was too strong or reflect light into the building on duller days. (Photo taken from the first-floor exterior gallery of building 18.)

The Building Research Station (2)
The 'Burn Hall', built on the site of the original site boiler house. Built to accommodate large-scale fire tests uninfluenced by wind and weather, the building includes an extract and filtering system to minimise unpleasant emissions to the atmosphere. This photograph was taken on the occasion of the first commissioning test when the local fire crew from Garston fire station attended to give assistance.
