The Three Horseshoes (4), Alveley - Shropshire's oldest pub?
Painted on the side of the pub and stated elsewhere is the claim that The Three Horseshoes in Alveley is the oldest pub in Shropshire, with a date of 1406. That certainly makes it an extremely old pub, but there are other pubs in Shropshire which claim to be older. These include the Swan Inn at Aston Munslow near Much Wenlock, which claims to be a 14th century coaching inn, which once accommodated Dick Turpin. A date of 1350 is claimed for this establishment. Technically one could argue perhaps that it is an inn not a pub, but these days the terms are virtually interchangeable. The Royal Oak at Cardington near Church Stretton is reputed to be the oldest continually licensed pub in Shropshire, and also claims to be circa 15th century. There are claims it was mentioned in the Domesday Book, which seems rather debatable. Its present name dates from the restoration of the monarchy in the mid-17th century. Another claimant is The White Hart at Ellesmere, but it appears it dates from the 16th century so must be ruled out. The Bull in Ludlow was first mentioned (as a building) in 1343, but may be older, but probably was not originally a pub. Any further suggestions welcome! Image Image Image

The Three Horseshoes (3), Alveley, Shrops
A sign of the times is that like many other pubs, an ugly smoking shelter has been tacked on to the back. No doubt it is essential so as to retain trade. The pub is believed to date from 1406, and claims to be the oldest in Shropshire. It is certainly very old, but there are other claimants to this title, as briefly outlined here:- Image It is Grade II listed. Image Image

The Three Horseshoes (2) - sign, Alveley, Shrops
The pub's sign is attached to one of the pub's walls. The spelling of Horseshoes on this sign as two words seems to be a mistake. Elsewhere it is spelt as one word. Image Image Image

The Three Horseshoes (1), Alveley, Shrops
A very old pub in the older part of the village, near the Parish Church. As The Bell, which was nearby, closed some years ago, the only other pubs in the village are at the other end and on the main Kidderminster - Bridgnorth road. Grade II listed. Image Image Image

The Three Horseshoes pub
As other images suggest, this lays claim to being the oldest public house in Shropshire; that in itself is arguable as there are others with valid claims, but it certainly has at its core a 17th century timber frame, and was Grade II listed https://www.britishlistedbuildings.co.uk/101367873-three-horseshoes-inn-alveley#.WiwzC9SLTGg in 1974.
