Painted on the side of the pub and stated elsewhere is the claim that The Three Horseshoes in Alveley is the oldest pub in Shropshire, with a date of 1406. That certainly makes it an extremely old pub, but there are other pubs in Shropshire which claim to be older. These include the Swan Inn at Aston Munslow near Much Wenlock, which claims to be a 14th century coaching inn, which once accommodated Dick Turpin. A date of 1350 is claimed for this establishment. Technically one could argue perhaps that it is an inn not a pub, but these days the terms are virtually interchangeable. The Royal Oak at Cardington near Church Stretton is reputed to be the oldest continually licensed pub in Shropshire, and also claims to be circa 15th century. There are claims it was mentioned in the Domesday Book, which seems rather debatable. Its present name dates from the restoration of the monarchy in the mid-17th century. Another claimant is The White Hart at Ellesmere, but it appears it dates from the 16th century so must be ruled out. The Bull in Ludlow was first mentioned (as a building) in 1343, but may be older, but probably was not originally a pub. Any further suggestions welcome! Image Image Image
