The White Lion Inn (2) - sign, 3 West Castle Street
Bridgnorth is quite keen on lions. As well as this White Lion Inn, there is still a Golden Lion Inn in High Street. A trades directory of 1828 also shows a Red Lion in Underhill Street, but by late Victorian times that seems to have either disappeared or changed its name. Image

Royal Mail Delivery Office (formerly Bridgnorth Post Office), 1 West Castle Street
This building dates from 1901, and is dated in the black and white area at the top of the building, It was built on the site of the entrance to Bridgnorth Castle bailey, which stood there until 1821. Until a few years ago the building was the town's main post office, but that is now in 63 High Street. Today the building is used by Royal Mail as its Bridgnorth Delivery Office, and it also has an enquiry office based here.

The New Market Hall, Postern Gate
The building in the middle is the New Market Hall, built in 1855/56 and designed by a local man, Robert Griffiths of Quatford. He also designed a similar but much larger market hall for Shrewsbury in the 1860's, which unfortunately has been demolished. A Grade II listed building, the New Market Hall is in an Italianate style, which is very unusual for this country. It has had its critics but now, over 150 years after it was built, it seems to fit in very well with its surroundings. As a market it was not very successful. When it opened traders refused to move in, and even today the Saturday market takes place in the High Street. The hall has therefore been used for other purposes.
