Canal and cooling towers near Rugeley, Staffordshire
The various built up areas of Rugeley have generally used The Trent and Mersey Canal (completed in 1777) as their northern boundary. Here the canal skirts round Brereton, giving a fine view of the cooling towers of the Rugeley Power Station. Cooling towers are heat removal devices used to transfer process waste heat to the atmosphere.
Note. Rugeley B power station was decommissioned in 2016.
Update: The cooling towers were demolished on 6 June 2021. Other infrastructure was demolished earlier, including the chimney on 24th January 2021.

The Ash Tree public house was built by Marstons in 2004 and has excellent outside seating for those wanting to bask in the sunshine and watch the boats.

Trent and Mersey Canal near Brereton in Staffordshire
This is the Trent and Mersey Canal east of Rugeley, looking north-west towards Ash Tree Bridge No 62 and Rugeley. The bridge carries the A513 Rugeley Road. Cooling towers at Rugeley power station are on the right*.
Boat crews need to take care here to avoid collision under the bridge! ;-)

Ash Tree Bridge near Brereton in Rugeley, Staffordshire
Ash Tree Bridge is No 62 across the Trent and Mersey Canal near Brereton in Rugeley. The bridge carries the A513 Rugeley Road.
There is a deceptively sharp turn for narrowboats approaching the bridge hole here, and oncoming craft cannot be seen by the tillerman until a very late stage. Boats can pass each other if they meet, but only if the oncoming vessel is already well to the left, and even then it is a tight squeeze. :-)

The housing is in St Thomas Way. Rugeley power station cooling towers loom in the distance, about three quarters of a mile away. This is the Trent and Mersey Canal, looking north-west towards Rugeley and Stone.
