On the trail of Tayler and Green
Tayler and Green was a Lowestoft architectural practice founded in 1938 which is best known for its council housing for the Loddon Rural District in Norfolk, over 700 dwellings built between 1945 and 1973. The definitive guide to the practice (Tayler and Green Architects 1938-1973: The Spirit of Place in Modern Housing, by Elain Harwood and Alan Powers, London 1998) lists new nursing staff accommodation for Shenley Hospital, built in 1961-62, among their works but adds "Demolished". This single-storey terrace off Queensway and a single cottage at right angles, however, has several features characteristic of Tayler & Green's work in Norfolk, particularly the date spelt out in the bricks on this gable end, like this one Image

Work by Tayler and Green?
Tayler and Green, a Lowestoft architectural practice founded in 1938, is best known for its council housing for the Loddon Rural District in Norfolk, over 700 dwellings built between 1945 and 1973. However, the relief pattern of the gable end brickwork on this single-storey cottage, the curved garden wall and (less easily seen here) the trellis on the front wall are all characteristic of Tayler & Green's work for Loddon, as this example shows Image

A very Tayler-and-Green corner at Shenleybury
Herbert Tayler and David Green, architects who practised in Lowestoft from 1938 to 1973, designed about 700 rural council houses for the Loddon Rural District in south-east Norfolk which gained them a national reputation for care and attention to detail both in architecture and landscaping. The practice biography by Elain Harwood and Alan Powers, published 20 years ago, lists as "Demolished" some nursing staff accommodation built for Shenley Hospital in 1961-62. However, I did not dream this corner which contains enough unmistakeable features of their work, namely: the date 1962 picked out in bricks on the left gable end (obscured by the shed); the sawtooth bargeboards above it; the curved garden wall behind the tree; the relief pattern of bricks on the right gable end; the trellis on the front walls of both houses and the low fencing along the access path. All can be seen here Image on one of Tayler & Green's Loddon estates.
