A very Tayler-and-Green corner at Shenleybury

Herbert Tayler and David Green, architects who practised in Lowestoft from 1938 to 1973, designed about 700 rural council houses for the Loddon Rural District in south-east Norfolk which gained them a national reputation for care and attention to detail both in architecture and landscaping. The practice biography by Elain Harwood and Alan Powers, published 20 years ago, lists as "Demolished" some nursing staff accommodation built for Shenley Hospital in 1961-62. However, I did not dream this corner which contains enough unmistakeable features of their work, namely: the date 1962 picked out in bricks on the left gable end (obscured by the shed); the sawtooth bargeboards above it; the curved garden wall behind the tree; the relief pattern of bricks on the right gable end; the trellis on the front walls of both houses and the low fencing along the access path.
