Blue Waters Pond
The lake fills a former lignite mine and clay pit, both used in the pottery industry here on the southern side of Bovey Tracey http://boveytraceyhistory.org.uk/topics/domestic-fuel-victorian/ . The extensive mine workings have now led to a problem for the residents of the adjacent New Park park home development (right), because, as Image] and Image] illustrate, Ashburton Road, from which this was taken, closed in March 2020 "after a landslip and a disused mining tunnel under the road was found to be in danger of collapsing" https://www.middevonadvertiser.co.uk/article.cfm?id=118894&headline=ELDERLY%20HIT%20BY%20FEARS%20OF%20ROAD%20COLLAPSE§ionIs=news&searchyear=2020 ; the road will remain closed to traffic until August 2021.

Barriers on Ashburton Road, Bovey Tracey
See Image] and Image]; the road is close to vehicles for over a year because of subsidence from old lignite mine workings. A very minor consolation is that the removal of trees has given a much clearer view of Blue Waters Pond, the lake that flooded the former pit Image

Barriers on Ashburton Road, Bovey Tracey
The barriers seen in the background of Image "Ashburton Road ... has been closed after a landslip and a disused mining tunnel under the road was found to be in danger of collapsing" https://www.middevonadvertiser.co.uk/article.cfm?id=118894&headline=ELDERLY%20HIT%20BY%20FEARS%20OF%20ROAD%20COLLAPSE§ionIs=news&searchyear=2020 . As https://www.boveytracey.gov.uk/includes/classes/forwardMedia.php?id=552 illustrates, this means a round trip of an extra five and a half kilometres for the residents of the park home estate at New Park, if they want to drive to Bovey Tracey - usually a kilometre and a half; many residents are elderly and rely on their cars.

Ashburton Road, Bovey Tracey
The road is closed to vehicles, probably until August 2021, but pedestrians and bikes can get past the barriers ahead. This was taken at the junction with Broad Park.
