The Hen Trap Steps
So called as they look like the ramp into a hen coop, these were built for the mill workers in Haliburton to get to their work.

Dangerous building site
This small gap site in High Buckholmside in Galashiels used to be home to some lock-up garages. The site had been open for some time until someone came along and decided to build a house, obviously without building and planning permission as the timber framed structure is built against two high retaining walls. The local authority has halted work and closed off the site to the public. Some shoring is evident at the roadside retaining wall.

A wall collapse in Galashiels
A 4m high rubble retaining wall to the rear of this small gap site at High Buckholmside has collapsed, caused probably by frost heave after the recent spell of very cold temperatures and heavy snowfall. The debris has come up to the sill height of a ground floor window on the property to the right. The site was closed off in 2007 with heras fencing by the local authority after someone had started to construct a house without building and planning permission – see Image The partly built house was demolished and the Building Control Department decision to halt the building project has been vindicated by this incident. The gravestones in the background are in Ladhope Cemetery.

The Waverley line ran from Carlisle to Edinburgh and was closed on 6th January 1969. The line through Galashiels has been converted into a footpath but plans are underway for a possible reopening of the line between Edinburgh and Tweedbank near Galashiels around 2011.

A footbridge over the Borders Railway Line
This is an old bridge dating back to the days of the Waverley Line. When I was a young boy in the 1950s I used to stand on this bridge to wait for a steam train to pass and be engulfed in exhaust smoke. For a view in the opposite direction before the Borders Railway was reinstated, see Image
