A wall collapse in Galashiels

A 4m high rubble retaining wall to the rear of this small gap site at High Buckholmside has collapsed, caused probably by frost heave after the recent spell of very cold temperatures and heavy snowfall. The debris has come up to the sill height of a ground floor window on the property to the right. The site was closed off in 2007 with heras fencing by the local authority after someone had started to construct a house without building and planning permission – see Image The partly built house was demolished and the Building Control Department decision to halt the building project has been vindicated by this incident. The gravestones in the background are in Ladhope Cemetery.
