The 1st green at Galashiels Golf Course
A view towards Buckholm Hill. The 1st hole used to be a par 4, but was shortened to a par 3 and a new green built after a housing developer bought some adjacent fields to the old green. Concerns were raised about golf balls entering the new housing scheme, and this caused a lengthy debate at the time, but the developer won the day and the hole was shortened. Update on Galashiels Golf Course:- As from Sunday 2nd March 2008, the course ceased to be an 18 hole layout and has been reduced to 9 holes. As a result this hole will no longer be a part of the official layout but will likely be kept as a practice facilities. For a full explanation of the move to 9 holes, see Image

Galashiels Golf Course
Looking back from the 1st green to the clubhouse with Appletreeleaves house to the right. When the course was a municipal layout run by the then local town council, the greenkeeper lived in this house, but nowadays it is a private house. To the left of the clubhouse, hidden by some trees, are the late 16th century remains of Appletreeleaves Tower. Ladhope Recreation Ground
This is the state of the old 1st green and fairway at Galashiels Golf Course since it was closed in March 2008 when the 18 hole layout was reduced to 9 holes. I disturbed a small charm of goldfinches feeding on thistle seeds when I approached to take this shot. For a similar view taken in January 2007 when the old 1st green was still in play, see Image

The clubhouse at Galashiels Golf Course
The clubhouse enjoys a prominent position overlooking the town from the west slopes of Blaikie's Hill. The land that the golf course and clubhouse occupy, known as Ladhope Recreation Ground, was donated to the people of Galashiels in 1912 by Mr Hugh Roberts. The first golf club was founded in 1884, disbanded in 1897 and reformed in 1912. The 18 hole course was designed by James Braid. The present clubhouse was upgraded and extended in the late 1960's and within recent years, has been extended to the rear to upgrade the changing room facilities.
