Former Holyrood Lace Mill
Now council offices. This mill manufactured plain net from 1829 to 1964. The mill owner for many years was Col J W Gifford, astronomer and pioneer in X-ray photography. I think this mill was home to an early single cylinder beam engine that is now preserved in America.

William Francis Fox 1837-1905 was in partnership with James William Gifford and two others. The basic lace netting was sent to Nottingham where William lived, to be patterned and finished. (William Fox was a grandson of Thomas Fox the woollen manufacturer of Tonedale Mills, Wellington

Former lace mill workshops, Chard
This building was rebuilt in about 1905 and provided and maintained machinery and bobbins for the Holyrood lace mill that is behind the photographer. It has now been converted to town houses (seen here), shops and a café. This elevation clearly shows the outline of a north light roof, although it has been rebuilt.
