Church of St Mary & St Andrew, Condover - monument to Thomas Cholmondeley
An unusual monument by the Victorian artist G. F. Watts to Thomas Cholmondeley (†1864) who took the name of Owen. He is depicted as a lifelike bearded soldier of the Crimea kneeling in prayer, his hands resting on his sword. A fellow pupil at art school with Watts was Reginald Cholmondeley, who carved the poignant memorial to his bride Alice that is close by. Image

The four figures that are commemorated on this wall monument are Dame Jane Norton (†1640), her husband Bonham Norton Esq., her father Judge Thomas Owen, and her brother Sir Roger Owen.

Church of St Mary & St Andrew, Condover - monument to the Owen family (detail)
The figure of Judge Thomas Owen, one of Queen Elizabeth's Justices of the Common Pleas. The son of a Shrewsbury merchant, he became a famous lawyer, and was a friend of Francis Bacon. He lies buried in Westminster Abbey, where he has a magnificent monument.

Church of St Mary & St Andrew, Condover - monument to Alice Cholmondeley
Alice Mary Cholmondeley (†1864) died in childbirth, the child followed her to the grave one year later. Her grieving husband, the sculptor Reginald Cholmondeley carved this poignant memorial to her. The figure of Alice is in white marble, lying as if asleep on a pallet; the inscription records: 'Reginald, always standing by, Carved me with his own hand'.
