Alice Mary Cholmondeley (†1864) died in childbirth, the child followed her to the grave one year later. Her grieving husband, the sculptor Reginald Cholmondeley carved this poignant memorial to her. The figure of Alice is in white marble, lying as if asleep on a pallet; the inscription records: 'Reginald, always standing by, Carved me with his own hand'.
