Charles Edward Brooke Girls' School
Board Schools are usually very impressive buildings and Charles Edward Brooke Girls' School with its twin towers and spires is no exception. It is seen here looking across the Nature Conservation Area in Myatts Fields Park. The school dates from 1897 when it was built for the London School Board. It is part of the Minet Estate. The Minet Estate was built up from the 1870s onwards and the Minet family provided a number of amenities, including the Minet Library and gave the site for Myatts Fields. The Minets were originally French Huguenots and the name Minet means little cat or kitten in French. A little cat was included in many of the buildings when the area was developed by the Minet family. The school will be changing its name to Saint Gabriel's College in September 2012, when it becomes co-educational. St Gabriel's College next door to the school in Cormont Road was the First London General Hospital. It was installed in August 1914 when the College emptied of young male students who had enlisted to fight in the war. The interesting history of the hospital and school can be read at http://ezitis.myzen.co.uk/firstlondon.html

Charles Edward Brooke School: detail of tower
The 'six-storey' south tower of the original building with the girls' and infants' entrances at the bottom. The original building, built in 1897 for the London School Board, consisted of a 3-storey central block with a 6-storey tower on each side. It was extended in 1912. See Image After the First World War the Cormont Secondary School became the Kennington Boys School, an annexe of the Kennington Secondary School. Today, the building is Grade II listed and is the Charles Edward Brooke Girls' School, administered by the Church of England. Information from 'Lost Hospitals of London' http://www.ezitis.myzen.co.uk/firstlondon.html I am uncertain as to the present status of the school.

Charles Edward Brooke School, Cormont Road
A particularly florid Board school ("a building of romance and fantasy" says the listing), characteristic of T.J. Bailey. Built in 1897-98 and 1912. Grade II listed.
