On this sunny September afternoon England had just begun a futile chase in their second innings against India. Scoreboard at stumps day 1, 6th Test at the Oval 1989
Taken at the time. England vs Australia in a rain affected game although this the first day was a scorcher. Australia elected to bat. Alan Igglesden and John Stephenson made their Test debuts for England. Number 5 was Dean Jones who went on to score 122 the next day. Number 4 was Allan Border, the captain who eventually made 76. The match ended in a draw with Australia winning the best of six 1989 Ashes series 4–0. Australia 1st innings 468 off 132.3 overs. England 1st innings 285 off 91.1 overs David Gower 76. Australia 2nd innings 219/4d (63 overs) England 2nd innings 143/5 (46.1 overs) The ground has altered considerably since this was taken. See also Image]

View from the boundary edge 3rd Test: England v India at The Oval 1990 - 1st day
Taken from a scanned photograph at the time. End of Thursday, 23 August 1990 - day 1 - India 1st innings 324/4 (RJ Shastri 135*, M Prabhakar 20*) Ultimately to become, at the time, the highest score by India against England. 606 - 9 wickets declared at 173 overs. Shastri, as man of the match, scored 187 whilst Kapil Dev batting at 8 scored 110. England replied with 340 all out after 123.4 overs. England 2nd innings, following on, scored 477-4 wickets declared at 154 overs. David Gower made 157 not out. Match drawn England won the 3-match series 1-0

Oval Cricket Ground
The Oval has been the home ground of Surrey County Cricket Club since it was opened in 1845. It was the first ground in England to host international Test cricket in September 1880.
