Hazelhurst Top Lock near Denford in Staffordshire
Looking east-south-east towards Denford, the view is from the footbridge (No 35), above the top lock at Hazelhurst Junction on the Caldon Canal. The flight of three Hazelhurst New Locks provides a rise (or fall) of 25ft 10in (about 7·9 metres). A public footpath crosses Bridge No 36 by the lock cottage.

Hazelhurst Top Lock and Bridge No 36 in Staffordshire
The turbulent water shows that the lock is being drained in order to allow a narrowboat in from behind the camera.
The flight of three Hazelhurst New Locks (Hollinhurst Locks) was built in 1840-1841 on a new line of the Caldon Canal. The locks replaced the troublesome staircase structure near Denford.
The flight provides a rise of 25ft 10in (about 7·9 metres).

Hazelhurst Top Lock west of Horsebridge in Staffordshire
Looking west towards Stoke-on-Trent, this is the Caldon Canal at Hazelhurst Junction (turn left for Leek). The image shows the top lock of the flight of three.
The three locks provide a rise (or fall) of 25ft 10in (about 7·9 metres).

Caldon Canal at Hazelhurst Junction, Staffordshire
To the right is the branch to Leek (this was the new main line route opened by 1800). This turns left and crosses over the main line at Hazelhurst Aqueduct about six hundred metres ahead. Straight ahead, down a flight of three locks, is the main line to Froghall, opened in 1841 replacing the circa 1800 line. An extension to Uttoxeter opened in 1811 only lasted until the late 1840s before being replaced by a railway.

Hazelhurst Junction west of Denford in Staffordshire
Looking west towards Endon, Stockton Brook and Stoke-on-Trent.
This shows Hazelhurst Top Lock (No 10) on the Caldon Canal at Hazelhurst Junction, which provides a rise or fall of 8ft 7in (2·61 metres). The flight of three "new" locks provides a rise of 25ft 10in (about 7·9 metres).
This is the 1841 redesign of the system. The three locks replaced the troublesome triple staircase (built c. 1800) at the original Hazelhurst Junction near Denford, but this in turn had been a replacement for three more widely spaced locks nearer Endon necessitated by the c1800 new canal maintaining the level from Stockton Brook. The currently designated Leek Branch is off to the left, along a circa 1800 cut.
