The turbulent water shows that the lock is being drained in order to allow a narrowboat in from behind the camera. The flight of three Hazelhurst New Locks (Hollinhurst Locks) was built in 1840-1841 on a new line of the Caldon Canal. The locks replaced the troublesome staircase structure near Denford. The flight provides a rise of 25ft 10in (about 7·9 metres).
