Looking west towards Endon, Stockton Brook and Stoke-on-Trent. This shows Hazelhurst Top Lock (No 10) on the Caldon Canal at Hazelhurst Junction, which provides a rise or fall of 8ft 7in (2·61 metres). The flight of three "new" locks provides a rise of 25ft 10in (about 7·9 metres). This is the 1841 redesign of the system. The three locks replaced the troublesome triple staircase (built c. 1800) at the original Hazelhurst Junction near Denford, but this in turn had been a replacement for three more widely spaced locks nearer Endon necessitated by the c1800 new canal maintaining the level from Stockton Brook. The currently designated Leek Branch is off to the left, along a circa 1800 cut.
