Bedford Street Staircase Locks, Caldon Canal, Etruria
The lower of the two chambers is empty. A narrowboat is entering the top chamber, which will then empty into this one, and the boat will move forwards. This lock will then be re-emptied, the gates opened, and the boat will proceed towards the junction with the Trent and Mersey Canal. The water level is dropped by 19ft 3in (nearly six metres).

A narrowboat emerges having descended the locks at Bedford Street on the Caldon Canal.
The two locks here are constructed as a staircase. The water from the upper lock is emptied straight into the lower lock. Care needs to exercised and paddles opened in the correct order.
