Bedford Street Staircase Locks are at the Stoke end of the Caldon Canal. The image shows the bottom lock. There are two locks, where the water from one is emptied directly into the other. The upper lock is always deeper than the lower one, or it wouldn't be able to fill it and allow the opening of the gates. The total rise (or fall) in water level is 19ft 3in (19ft 3in (nearly six metres). Image]
